Canada issues travel alert amid severe flooding, landslides

Travellers are urged to “exercise a high degree of caution” due to ongoing natural disasters

The Government of Canada has issued a travel alert for Kenya amid a spate of natural disasters hitting the African country in recent weeks.

Persistent heavy rainfall has led to ‘severe’ flooding and landslides throughout the country, including in the nation’s capital of Nairobi.

“Since March 2026, heavy rains have caused severe flooding and landslides across the country, resulting in casualties, displaced persons, and significant damage to buildings and infrastructure,” said the alert on the Canadian government’s travel advice portal.

The statement advises that severe weather may disrupt transportation, utilities, and telecommunications throughout the affected regions.

BBC News reported on Mar. 15 that flash flooding across the country, including in Nairobi, had killed at least 66 people.

Light rainfall is likely over much of Kenya through the next week. The heaviest precipitation will likely fall across neighbouring Ethiopia, which is also dealing with its own round of significant flooding.
