Severe storms cause flooding, prompt evacuations in Quebec Thursday

Quebec was hit hard with back-to-back thunderstorms throughout the day Thursday. Severe storms fired back up in the province in the evening, bringing more flooding rains and new dangers.

Water accumulation was reported on several Quebec roads by late Thursday morning after back-to-back storm cells moved over parts of the province.

Images quickly surfaced on social media of flooded roads, including a section of Highway 20.

Preliminary data shows that over 40 mm of rain fell over some areas in just a few hours.

There have also been reports of flooded basements from the heavy rains.

In Quebec City, travel was impossible on Foulon Road due to flooding. Residents in the area had to be evacuated by emergency services with the help of a water rescue team.

At 5:30 p.m. ET, Environment and Climate Change Canada issued new severe thunderstorm warnings in the province.

Flash floods are now a concern as regions that already received over 40 mm of rain could receive even more with these new rounds of storms.
