Ontario’s first significant tornado of 2025 confirmed

The tornado on July 27 is the fourth EF-2 tornado confirmed in Canada so far in 2025

Ontario’s first significant tornado of 2025 touched down in the northwestern part of the province during a round of severe storms on July 27.

Experts with the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) confirmed the twister using satellite imagery to identify a damage path in the forest near Mine Centre, Ont., just north of the Trans-Canada Highway and about 60 km west of Atikokan.

Satellite imagery revealed EF-2 tree damage in the region, consistent with estimated maximum winds of about 190 km/h.

Canada tornadoes 2025 as of August 8

Tornadoes are considered significant when they produce damage rated EF-2 or higher. This is Ontario’s first significant tornado confirmed in 2025, and the fourth EF-2 tornado confirmed in Canada so far this year.

Surveyors from the NTP have confirmed six tornadoes across Ontario through early August, bringing the nationwide annual tornado count up to 39–far behind where we’d expect to see the tally by this point in the summer.
