New Brunswick officials closely monitoring spring flood threat
The New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization (NBEMO) spoke to The Weather Network recently on the current spring flooding risk in the province
River watch continues in New Brunswick as some communities are expected to reach flood stage this week.
"We certainly know this time of year can be of high anxiety for people. A few communities like Fredericton and Gagetown, N.B., are slated to reflect this stage," said Geoffrey Downey, communications officer with New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization (NBEMO).
The good news, however, is this flood stage won't contain a lot of local impacts, Downey noted.
Last week's flood survey in the north saw the snowpack reduced by 30 centimetres, but there is still plenty more to go. Temperatures and rainfall will play a key role in determining how fast the remaining snow melts.
With the forecast calling for overnight lows to dip down to around -6°C, Downey said this situation would be a "controlled [thaw] where it's not melting 24 hours a day."
However, the amount of rain is adding to the threat, making conditions "quite favourable."
Some residents have been spotted around the dams, so NB Power is warning people to stay away as they pose a real danger with the speed of the water, ice and debris.
