From snow and sub-freezing wind chills to nearly 40°C heat, baseball’s biggest championship series has had its fair share of extreme weather.

The Fall Classic has occasionally tipped into full-on winter mode, but never more dramatically than in the 1997 World Series in Cleveland.

Fall Classic turned into winter

On Oct. 22, 1997 (Game 4) between the then-Cleveland Indians (Cleveland Guardians) and Florida Marlins, fans at the then-Jacobs Field (now Progressive Field) in Cleveland, Ohio, wrestled with a trace of snow as the temperature hovered near 0°C, with a wind chill of –5°C. It remains one of the coldest games in World Series history.

But it wasn’t the snowiest weather during a World Series.

The 1979 series in Pittsburgh takes that title. Game 1 between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Baltimore Orioles was actually postponed due to accumulating snow, and to this day, it remains the only snow-related World Series postponement on record.

Although the coolest daytime highs of the fall are forecast during Friday’s game, temperatures are expected to sit near seasonal for late October and early November in Toronto, mitigating any real chance of snow.

When the Fall Classic felt like a heat wave

At the other end of the spectrum lies Oct. 24, 2017, when thermometers in Los Angeles, Calif., hit a blistering 39°C at first pitch of Game 1 between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros.

Hottest World Series on record 2017 Los Angeles versus Houston

This benchmark stands as the hottest World Series game ever recorded, turning Dodger Stadium into a furnace.

Before the 2017 California heat wave, the only World Series games to hit the 32°C mark came during the 2001 World Series (New York Yankees versus Arizona Diamondbacks) at the then-Bank One Ballpark (now Chase Field) in Phoenix, Ariz. It’s debatable if it counts, given that those readings were the outdoor temperatures for an indoor venue.

This year: Playing in their comfort zones

This year, however, both teams will be right at home, playing within just a few degrees of their seasonal normals. There’s no record-breaking heat or flurries in the forecast, just classic October baseball ahead.
