Canada has launched a new early earthquake warning system: Learn more here

More than 10 million people in Canada's most earthquake-prone regions will now be able to receive earthquake alerts.

Canada has taken a major step forward in earthquake preparedness with a new early warning system now officially running across Quebec and Eastern Ontario. The system is designed to give people a critical few seconds of advance notice before the strongest shaking begins — and in an emergency, those seconds can make all the difference.

The system is in place in other earthquake-prone countries like Japan, and is facilitated through a network of more than 200 ground sensors set up across the region.

Alerts are sent to television, radio stations, and all mobile phones in the affected area.
