Buried: Major snowstorm brings road closures, flight cancellations to Ontario
As of 9 a.m. Thursday, southern Ontario, including the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), is experiencing a significant snowstorm, with reported snow totals ranging from 15 to over 20 cm. The snowfall is intense, with rates of 2 to 4 cm per hour, making it challenging for snowplows to keep the roads clear. If you encounter a snowplow, please remember that it’s not only unsafe but also illegal to attempt to pass it. Doing so can lead to hefty fines.
Thursday morning, Toronto police announced that the Don Valley Parkway was closed due to dangerous winter driving conditions and multiple collisions. This closure serves as a reminder to all drivers to exercise caution during these severe weather conditions.
The snowfall is expected to continue throughout the morning and into the afternoon, although it should start to dissipate across the GTA by early afternoon. As a result of the storm, many schools are reporting closures, and bus services have been cancelled throughout southern Ontario.
Additionally, residents are facing bitter wind chills this morning, with temperatures dropping into the -20s. This marks one of the coldest daytime highs seen in the past four years, so it’s essential to dress warmly if you need to venture outside.

If you plan to travel, be sure to check current road conditions before heading out, as several areas may be significantly impacted by the storm. Travellers should also be aware that many flights have been delayed or cancelled at Toronto Pearson Airport and Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport due to the weather.
