Sunset hack: How to tell the time using only your fingers

Out on a spring hike and looking for the time? Here's a simple hack to use during your outdoor adventures

When out for a spring walk or hike, losing track of time can happen so easily. Especially when you’re lounging lakeside reflecting on all of the snow you've had to shovel this past winter.

Sunset times are easy to find on The Weather Network App, but if you happen to leave your phone at home, there's a simple way to know when it's time to head home or start setting up camp.

And all you need are your hands!

Here's how. Extend your arm and line up the bottom of your hand with the horizon. Remember to never stare directly into the sun.

Every finger that fits between the sun and the horizon represents 15 minutes of sunlight left. That means two fingers would be a half hour, and four fingers an hour. If there’s lots of space in between, you still have lots of time.

It’s pretty simple and can save you the hassle of having to make your way back to the start of the trail in the dark.
