Stuck in a spring rut: Ontario to see soggy, dull pattern
A stalled pattern will force occasional rounds of rain and thunderstorms to swing through Ontario into early next week
Ontario is in for a stagnant pattern over the next couple of days as a blockage in the upper-atmosphere forces a soggy, gloomy system to sit and spin over the Great Lakes through early next week.
Expect this period of wet weather to begin across southern Ontario on Sunday and continue through Tuesday.
DON'T MISS: Blocking pattern to dictate Canada’s weather into next week
Sunday: Rain spreads into southern Ontario
A centre of high pressure over the Atlantic Ocean will pump the brakes on the upper-level pattern across Ontario, forcing a low-pressure system to stall over the Great Lakes for the next several days.
We’ll see a dry start to the day across southern Ontario before rain starts creeping into the lower Great Lakes region. Expect rain to push into southwestern Ontario through the morning hours, reaching the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) by the afternoon.
A swath of rain will extend from Kincardine to Toronto and east toward Kingston by dinner time on Sunday. Communities to the north will remain dry but cloudy. Showers will spread toward Georgian Bay through the overnight hours.
Wind gusts of 20-30 km/h in the GTA, with 30–50 km/h gusts through southwestern Ontario. The rain and breezy conditions could cut short Toronto’s cherry blossom season.
Monday into Tuesday: Rain, thunderstorm risk build
We can expect more of the same heading into the beginning of the workweek as on-and-off showers continue throughout southern Ontario.
A risk for thunderstorms could build across the GTA, Niagara Peninsula, and southwestern Ontario by Monday afternoon. Pockets of heavy rain are also possible across the GTA.

Folks up toward Barrie and Ottawa will see dry conditions on Monday morning, with showers pushing into the region by Monday afternoon.
Showers will spread into northeastern Ontario by Monday night.
Widespread light rain will continue across southern and central Ontario come Tuesday. While the rain will come to an end across much of southern Ontario by Tuesday evening, precipitation will persist across northeastern Ontario and the Ottawa Valley.
