Temperatures will rise sharply heading into early next week as strong winds blow into Alberta this weekend
Secure those holiday decorations and tighten your grip on the wheel this weekend as strong winds are in the forecast across Alberta.
We’ll see strong winds develop along the foothills beginning Saturday and lasting into Monday. Gusts up to 90 km/h are possible at times during the peak of the event.
These winds will also help temperatures soar above the freezing mark for much of southern Alberta, a sharp turnaround from the deep freeze we’ve experienced in recent days.

Gusty winds develop Saturday, persist into Monday
Winds will pick up through the overnight hours late Saturday into Sunday throughout the foothills from the Yellowhead down to the international border.

Westerly gusts along the Highway 22 corridor south of Longview could hover around 90 km/h through Sunday afternoon before subsiding in the evening. Expect gusts to remain relatively weak along and east of the QE2 corridor, topping out around 40 km/h.
Sunday’s daytime highs will rise above the freezing mark throughout southern Alberta, with double-digit temperatures possible along and near Highway 3.

Monday looks to be the windiest day of the event as westerly winds ramp up along the foothills. We’ll see gusty winds expand toward the QE2 corridor into Monday evening ahead of a cold front surging in from the north.
Afternoon wind gusts up to 90 km/h are possible along the QE2 into the evening ahead of a cold front that’ll surge in from the north. Winds will subside into the evening hours, but 50-70 km/h gusts may extend east of the QE2 up to the Saskatchewan border.

Expect another round of above-freezing daytime highs throughout southern Alberta on Monday, with some areas potentially notching double-digit readings once again.
