Severe storms shift into eastern Ontario, Quebec, risk of heavy rain and winds

A significant weather system is bringing a severe thunderstorm risk to parts of eastern Ontario and southern Quebec through Thursday

A dynamic weather system is set to bring severe thunderstorms and significant rainfall to parts of eastern Ontario and southern Quebec on Thursday. Rainfall warnings are currently in place, with localized areas potentially receiving 50+ mm of rain, which may lead to localized flooding.

Warm frontal showers are expected to move into Quebec early Thursday morning, paving the way for a very active weather pattern.

Powerful winds, isolated tornado risk

As a cold front approaches in the early afternoon, a strong line of storms may develop along the Quebec-U.S. border.

Embedded rotation in these storms could generate an isolated tornado, particularly in the Eastern Townships.

During the late afternoon and evening hours, daytime heating may further intensify thunderstorms, with areas from Ottawa-Gatineau to Trois-Rivières at risk for strong storms.

Isolated severe storms are expected in the southwestern Laurentians, Lanaudière, and southern Mauricie regions, with strong wind gusts of 80–90 km/h possible.

Strong winds will continue into Thursday afternoon in areas downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario, as well. A wind warning is in effect for the Niagara region, with gusts anticipated to reach between 70–90 km/h. These winds may lead to local utility outages and minor damage.

Unsettled conditions will linger into Friday as the storm system stalls near the Gaspé Peninsula, prompting chances of wrap-around thunderstorms.
