Prairies to give May a warm welcome, but beware the cold shoulder

Get ready for a taste of summer to kick off May!

The past weekend across Alberta reminded folks of spring's wild side, with warm temperatures starting off the final weekend of April and chilly air finishing it off. To the east, Manitoba has been soaking in one last round of April showers thanks to a low-pressure system tracking through the U.S. Midwest.

With only the final few days of April remaining, we're able to look ahead to the end of the week—and beginning of May.

Prairies Friday forecast temperatures - April 28, 2025

May will be greeted across the Prairies by a taste of summer warmth as temperatures soar to well above seasonal.

By Friday, temperatures will reach the mid-20s in Alberta, with the warm temperatures also spreading eastward across Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Like last weekend, however, we'll see the warmth sharply drop back toward seasonal.

Medicine Hat, Alta., warmest temperature for the Prairies so far in 2025_April 28

The western Prairies will see Saturday bring the highest temperatures, possibly reaching up to 28°C before the chillier air moves back in.

Saskatchewan and Manitoba, on the other hand, will begin to see the thermometer go down on Saturday, although the cooldown won't be as dramatic as Alberta's.

In all, this will be a great start to May across all three Prairie provinces.

There is some uncertainty as to how far north the warmth will reach, though. It will likely be cooler on our side of the border north of the Yellowhead Highway.
