October to end on a frighteningly snowy note for some Albertans

Widespread, substantial snowfall will create hazardous driving conditions across northern Alberta as we close out the month.

Spooky season will come with an extra chill in the air across northern Alberta as we look at a widespread snow event forecast for the region.

Two rounds of snow will move across the region by the mid-week, with the first round forecast to bring the majority of the snowfall.

A low-pressure system moving in from British Columbia, which brought high winds and heavy rains to the coast, will make its way into northern Alberta on Sunday, kicking off this chilling event.

Parents may want to make sure they have warm backup costume plans for their little ones through the week, as some areas could see up to 20 cm of snow by Wednesday.

Rain transitions into snow heading into the mid-week

The event won't start off as snow right away, though. It will initially kick off with some light rain on Sunday morning, bringing only a few millimetres along Highway 16 between Whitecourt and Edmonton.

We'll see the rain spread northeast throughout the day on Sunday, with 10-20 mm forecast before temperatures begin to drop and the rain transitions into wet snow by the evening.

Surfaces will be especially slick and slushy thanks to the coating of rain below the wet snow. Drivers should use extra caution while out, especially without winter tires on.

Gusty winds may also make travel along Highway 16 tricky through Monday.

Tuesday will give folks a brief break from the snowy weather, but another round will sweep over the province on Wednesday.

To the south, we'll see 15-20 cm of alpine snow fall on Sunday, as well as gusty winds between 50-70 km/h.
