Multiple rounds of beneficial rains on the way to Atlantic Canada

Several bouts of precipitation will sweep through the Atlantic provinces heading into next week

An active pattern travelling across the country could bring some much-needed rain to the drought-stricken Atlantic provinces this upcoming week.

The rounds of rainfall expected to move through the region won’t be enough to erase the ongoing drought, but it should make a small dent in the growing deficit.

First round of rain arrives Monday night

Our first opportunity for precipitation will arrive Monday night as a warm front lifts into the Maritimes.

A centre of high pressure anchored over Newfoundland will delay the eastward progress of the moisture, keeping much of the island dry through the first half of the week.

Light precipitation amounts on the order of 5-15 mm are expected throughout most of the Maritimes.

Second round of rain begins Wednesday

We’ll see a more organized storm system push into the Maritimes late Wednesday evening, spreading another round of rainfall and shower activity across the Maritimes.

This moisture will eventually move toward Newfoundland, possibly even stalling across the province to finish off the week.

Folks across the Maritimes can expect general rainfall totals of 10-20 mm from this midweek system.

The midweek system could stall over southeastern Newfoundland into the day Friday and Saturday, potentially bringing some areas as much as 50 mm of additional rainfall through the beginning of the weekend.

Rainfall deficits piling up across Atlantic Canada

We started October with every portion of the Maritimes in Newfoundland mired in some degree of drought conditions.

How bad is it? This month alone, Halifax has only seen 6 per cent of its average monthly rainfall with just 8.8 mm as of Oct. 18. St. John’s follows with just 31.4 mm in the gauge since the first of the month, which represents 20 per cent of October’s typical rainfall in the city.

While this upcoming rainfall won’t erase the deficits, any little bit helps when the ground is this parched.
