Heavy rain spreads into Ontario, Quebec as system taps into Hurricane Melissa
Rainfall warnings are in effect for parts of Ontario and Quebec as heavy rain and gusty winds move through the regions
Melissa swept through the northern Caribbean as a historic Category 5 hurricane, leaving a path of destruction from Jamaica to Cuba and Haiti. On Thursday, the storm was seen accelerating over open waters as it tracked toward Bermuda, bringing high winds and widespread damage in its wake.

Atlantic Canada may experience significant rainfall and tropical-force winds from the remnants of Melissa on Friday and Saturday. At the same time, moisture moving up the Atlantic coast will bring heavy rain to parts of Ontario and Quebec beginning Thursday. While not directly caused by Melissa, the storm is contributing to increased moisture in the region.

Heavy rain pushes into Ontario Thursday, warnings in effect
A low pressure system tracking south of the border is pulling in tropical moisture from Melissa, bringing rain and wind to southern Ontario and Quebec through Friday.

Rainy conditions began early Thursday in areas from Hamilton and Niagara to Toronto and Kingston, becoming heavier in eastern regions by the afternoon before spreading into Ottawa.
Rain will ease across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Niagara by Friday, with conditions expected to dry out ahead of Halloween festivities. However, Ottawa is set to see persistent evening showers.

Rainfall amounts are forecast to range from 20-30 mm for most areas.
Kingston, Ottawa, and Montreal could see heavier totals of 30-50 mm or more.

As the system continues to move out Friday evening, widespread winds of 50-70 km/h are possible, posing risks of power outages and hazards like debris or unsecured Halloween decorations.

Chilly weather follows for the weekend, with daytime highs around 8°C and lows near 0°C.
