Frost alerts cover southern Ontario ahead of a chilly night

Warmer temperatures are here—but cooler nights stubbornly hold on, as well

A chilly night is in store for southern Ontario with widespread frost advisories in effect across the region.

Overnight lows will fall into the lower single digits and come close to the freezing mark in some locations. Cold temperatures and clear skies will aid in the formation of frost, which could be dangerous for tender plants.

Ontario frost advisory May 8 2025

An upper-level trough digging over the Great Lakes has allowed below-seasonal temperatures to spill into the region to end the week.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a frost advisory overnight Thursday into Friday morning for much of southern Ontario, excluding the far southwest and the immediate Toronto area.

Frost can damage or kill tender plants. Cover up your outdoor plants to protect them from the cold temperatures and potential frost formation. If possible, bring potted or hanging plants indoors through Friday morning.

Ontario Average Date of Last Frost

Many communities throughout southern Ontario see the average date of their last frost around the last week of April and first week of May. These are just averages, though—frost can, and sometimes does, occur well after these dates.
