While this isn't expected to be a significant weather event, the addition of fog could pose challenges for driving, potentially leading to the formation of black ice—a hidden hazard for drivers. With temperatures below freezing, freezing fog is possible, along with freezing rain or drizzle.
Black ice can form when a thin layer of moisture freezes on road surfaces, becoming nearly invisible against dark asphalt, which can increase the risk of accidents. Motorists should remain cautious and anticipate reduced visibility, especially in the early morning or late evening.
Freezing rain risk increases Friday
A cold front that slid southward overnight Thursday has created a brief risk of freezing rain or drizzle in the Ottawa area early Friday. Light moisture tracking down the Ottawa Valley could lead to icy conditions during the morning commute.
This week, temperatures across Ontario have been slightly below seasonal, with overnight lows dipping a few degrees below freezing. As cold air settles in the valleys overnight, it increases the chance of freezing rain as moisture arrives.

The areas most likely to see impacts include eastern Ontario from Arnprior to Cornwall, the Richelieu Valley in Quebec, and Highway 7 near Perth, Ont.
Drivers travelling Friday morning are urged to exercise caution due to the potential for slick roads and low visibility. Remember to slow down and give vehicles around you more space when driving in inclement weather. In foggy areas, use your low-beam lights to help you see and so that others can see you.
Slippery sidewalks pose a risk of falls or injuries for pedestrians, as well. Plan commutes accordingly and take extra care on roads and walkways.
By 9 to 10 o'clock Friday morning, rising temperatures above freezing should reduce the risk of icy conditions.
