Manitoba schools close as weather warnings, blizzard cleanup continue

Snowfall warnings, blowing snow advisories in parts of southern Manitoba

It's another snow day for students at dozens of schools in southern Manitoba as more weather alerts were issued one day after a blizzard.

FORECAST: Next storm brings additional snow and travel headaches to the Prairies

Blowing snow advisories and snowfall warnings are in place for parts of the south on Friday, according to Environment Canada.

Driven by yet another Alberta Clipper — which resulted in the rare step of all public school divisions in Winnipeg closing Thursday — a snowfall warning on Friday is expected to drop 10-15 centimetres around rural municipality of Yellowhead, including Shoal Lake and Elphinstone.

It is also forecast to bring winds gusting as high as 60-70 km/h, which means reduced visibility at times as the fresh snow gets whipped around.

Those winds are also responsible for a blowing snow advisory that covers about half of the Interlake and almost all of southern Manitoba, from the Saskatchewan border to the east side of Lake Winnipeg.

General snowfall amounts across that advisory area are expected to be in the range of five to 12 cm, with higher amounts over the Parklands region.
