Colorado low expected to drench Manitoba with heavy rain, strong winds

Heavy rain and gusty winds could call for a rainy end to the week in southern Manitoba.

A Colorado low is preparing to move north, bringing lots of rainfall with it.

The system is predicted to move into southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba on Thursday, bringing rain, wind and a significant drop in temperature.

Showers will begin Thursday morning, particularly near Winnipeg and will intensify during the evening as the storm's centre moves deeper into the Prairies.

By Thursday night, there will be more consistent rain than the occasional shower.

Storm intensifies Thursday night

Forecasters expect that rainfall will increase Thursday evening and continue into Friday as the low moves across Manitoba's Interlake region.

Totals of 30 to 50 millimetres are likely around the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border, with 20 to 40 millimetres expected to move northward over the province.

By the time things settle down, Winnipeg could get 10 to 20 millimetres. And if the rain wasn't enough, the wind is also joining the party.

Gusts of 50 to 70 kilometres per hour are anticipated over southern Manitoba on Friday, particularly during the day and into the evening.

With the dense clouds and rain, temperatures will linger around 10ºC or 11ºC through the weekend, which is a few degrees lower than seasonal norms.

While it is not quite snow season yet, the system will undoubtedly make it feel like autumn has fully taken over.

However, there is a ray of hope. Forecasts indicate active weather could return next week, hinting that Manitoba may not be done with this storm track yet.
