Chilly Sunday morning yields Toronto its first fall frost

A tad behind schedule, Toronto saw its first frost of the autumn on Sunday morning as temperatures dropped to the freezing mark, prompting a frost advisory

A sign of the fall season is the first frost, with Toronto finally getting its first taste of it.

On Sunday morning, temperatures at Toronto's Pearson International Airport dipped to 0°C at 8 a.m., according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC)--leading to frost and an advisory from the weather agency.

The frosty benchmark is a little behind schedule, with an average date of around Oct. 20. The last time temperatures were this cool in Toronto was in April.

Cool, overnight lows and frost normally occur during clear nights with light or calm winds.

Gardeners and farmers will be monitoring this. Cover up plants, especially those in frost-prone areas. Take preventative measures to protect frost-sensitive plants and trees.

"Frost may damage some crops in frost-prone areas. Temperatures are expected to remain near the freezing mark early this morning," ECCC warns in the advisory.
