Atmospheric river set to fuel heavy B.C. rains into this weekend

Some areas could see more than 100 mm of rainfall through Sunday

Change is on the way as an atmospheric river promises a significant bout of precipitation for portions of coastal British Columbia.

The event could bring some areas their entire average rainfall for the month of September in just a couple of days.

BC Atmospheric River Rating

A narrow band of Pacific moisture—an atmospheric river—drifting down the coast from Alaska and northern B.C. will stall out as it reaches the Central Coast and northern Vancouver Island to start the weekend.

This will be a focused event for the affected areas. Forecasters expect the atmospheric river rating to reach AR3 across the Central Coast and northwestern Vancouver Island. This includes the community of Bella Bella.

Significant rainfall totals are on tap through Sunday. Portions of the Central Coast could easily see more than 100 mm of rain through this weekend.

Bella Coola, which averages about 90 mm of rain in a typical September, could easily see their entire average monthly rainfall this weekend alone.

The North Coast can expect 50-70 mm of rain in the gauges through this weekend. Lower totals are in the forecast farther south. Vancouver Island will see totals range from 5 mm in the south to as much as 50 mm to the north. Forecasters expect a general swath of 10-20 mm of rain across the Lower Mainland.
