Rain and storms take aim at Alberta before a much cooler long weekend ahead

The wet weather is here to stay for Alberta, with more rain and thunderstorms set for Wednesday before a weekend cooldown

It's been a soggy start to the week across much of Alberta, though a much needed reprieve from the recent dry conditions, and extreme wildfire threat.

On Monday, Red Deer saw 27.6 mm of rain, while Calgary caught much less at 9.8 mm. That was the first signs of rain for the entire month of May, however. Calgary still has some catching up to do if it wants to hit its normal yearly May rainfall of 61.1 mm.

The system coming in from the north may also bring thunderstorms by Wednesday afternoon. They would, however, be spread out across the province in isolated storms bringing heavy rain and strong winds.

Small hail could also make an appearance in certain parts of Alberta, but decent storm energy could bring larger hail to the northeast.

It’s hard to gauge the severity of the thunderstorms, as they are very hit or miss due to being spread out over such a large area of the province.

Our attention will also be closely locked over Calgary, where the storms could get a boost from the foothill dynamics.
