10-20 cm: Another spring snowstorm hits Manitoba and northern Ontario

An Alberta clipper is bringing significant snowfall to Manitoba and northern Ontario through Wednesday, with blowing snow and hazardous travel expected

Snow returns to Manitoba and northern Ontario, with totals reaching up to 20 cm through Thursday. Additional weather systems are expected to impact the region over the next few weeks, as well.

Parts of northern Ontario have already exceeded typical April snowfall after a series of lows delivered over 30 cm of snow in the first week of the month.

An Alberta clipper is delivering significant snowfall to Manitoba and northern Ontario through Wednesday.

Snowfall warnings are in effect for parts of southern Manitoba, including Winnipeg, where hazardous travel conditions and periods of near-zero visibility are expected.

"Although the snow will be relatively brief, very heavy snowfall rates - as much as 5 cm in one hour - can be expected, with near-zero visibility expected at times," warns Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

Northern Ontario will see the system lose some of its moisture as it progresses.

Between 15-20 cm of snow is forecast in parts of northwestern Ontario and regions north of Lake Superior.

Moderate snowfall and gusty winds of 40-60+ km/h are anticipated Wednesday, creating travel challenges along the Trans-Canada Highway and northern routes near Lake Superior.

Between 10-20+ cm of snow is forecast for areas including Kenora, Thunder Bay, Geraldton, Kapuskasing, and Timmins. Notably, Kapuskasing has now recorded over 110 consecutive days of at least 100 cm of snow cover since December 18.

Long-range snow outlook: This isn't the end just yet

While a brief dry spell with rain is expected early next week, colder temperatures could bring another round of accumulating snow as rain transitions to ice and snow in the region by midweek.
