Canada set for dazzling northern lights show as September skies glow

Best chance since spring to catch the northern lights, with a solar storm lighting up skies over Canada and parts of the U.S.

Canada's night skies are about to put on their best display in months.

A solar eruption has sent charged particles toward Earth, laying the groundwork for a northern lights display Monday night that could extend across much of the country and even into parts of the United States.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a geomagnetic storm watch, classifying the event as moderate Level 2 to 3 for September 1-2.

While it will not be as spectacular as last year's aurora displays, forecasters say this is the best chance to see the shimmering lights since spring.

Longer nights, better sights

Unlike the short days of summer, September's longer nights make conditions ideal for skywatching.

With darkness falling earlier, Canadians may have a better opportunity to see the aurora—though, as always, a clear northern horizon is crucial.

This geomagnetic activity is caused by a recent solar eruption, which emitted a burst of energy toward Earth.

As the particles collide with the atmosphere, they form the glowing green, pink and purple curtains that aurora hunters are familiar with.

Tips for chasing the aurora

If you're heading out, experts recommend finding a dark spot far away from city lights and allowing your eyes to adjust—faint auroras can appear slowly before bursting into colour.

For those looking to capture the moment, a tripod can make all the difference.

So, whether you're in the Prairies, Ontario, Quebec, or even the northern U.S., this week's skies could be worth staying up late for.
