Here's how much wind speeds can affect your hike
Weather is more than just a backdrop when hiking: It can make or break your day.
As you climb to higher elevations, wind speeds increase, especially in exposed areas.
From 12-29 kilometres per hour, you might notice loose clothing flapping around or see your hat blown off.
Once you get into the 30-38 kilometre per hour range, the wind might begin to impact your hike.
At winds of 39-50 kilometres per hour, you'll probably remain steady but be slightly inconvenienced.
By 51-60 kilometres per hour, your balance may be affected. Even strong adults will start to feel the push. Stay far away from cliffs and edges. You'll want to start looking for flat terrain that doesn't have a lot of roots, dips, and rocks that can further throw off your footing.
When you hit 61-75 kilometres per hour, you'll need to lean into the wind. Now is the time to get to a lower elevation, because this can be a dangerous situation.

At 76-88 kilometres per hour, walking will become extremely difficult, and you'll have to brace yourself in between gusts. You're likely to get blown over, and you definitely shouldn't be outside. Remember: Wind speeds of 90 kilometres per hour are strong enough to uproot trees.
Always check your weather app before heading out, and adjust your route to avoid exposed areas when wind is in the forecast.
If winds unexpectedly pick up while you're on the trail, get to a lower elevation and try to find sheltered areas.
Stay safe and happy hiking!
