Five common mistakes with fall yard maintenance

The Weather Network has five fall yard maintenance mistakes you might be making.

Winter is coming.

While you’re eager to get out and wrap up the outdoor season, here are five common mistakes you could be making in your yard.

The first mistake?

“Homeowners [and] garden owners do too much,” said Matt McFarland of The Growing Season.

He noted that fall is not the time for making your gardens Instagram-worthy.

"We used to do this all the time...but we’ve learned better.”

The second mistake is how you’re leaving your garden beds to overwinter.

Should you be leaving a layer of leaves there, too?

“The answer is distinctly yes, but there [are] a couple [of] small exceptions here," said McFarland. “If you’ve got large, deciduous trees that are prone to fungus [then don't leave them there].”

“If you leave those infected leaves on your flower bed, you’re creating a breeding ground for more fungus.”
