Bears are emerging: How to properly use bear spray

If you're planning on heading into the wilderness this summer, be prepared for whatever comes your way. The Weather Network's Connor O'Donovan learns how to properly use bear spray.

You’ve purchased your bear spray and are eager to hit the trails. But if you found yourself in a bear encounter, would you know how to use it effectively?

Wildlife safety expert Kim Titchener, founder of Bear Safety & More Inc., highlights a common mistake: keeping bear spray out of reach. “You want to have that can of bear spray physically on your body in a holster,” she advises.

There are various options for holsters, including waist and chest styles. It’s crucial to ensure that the spray is easily accessible, as you may only have seconds to react in an emergency.

If you do encounter a bear, it’s important to remain calm. In some cases, you may not need to use the spray at all. Observe the bear's behaviour closely; stand tall, back away slowly, and look for signs of aggression, such as salivation or growling, which may indicate that the bear is about to charge.
