These bugs are also notoriously sneaky and can hide from human sight. But the extermination experts at Orkin have a special four-legged team that can sniff out even invisible insects.

Meet Chase, the bed bug dog! His nose knows exactly where they’re hiding.

“Bed bugs give off a pheromone,” said Jason Olsen, a K9 handler with Orkin Canada. “You have to teach the dog to find that pheromone and reward him.”

Chase loves working—he was very eager to show us his skills at Orkin’s training facility in Scarborough, Ont.

Bed bugs prefer mild weather, and they really thrive in warmer months. This is when they’re more active and reproduce the most. But these insects are downright resilient and survive year-round.

So, what should you do if you suspect you might have bed bugs?

“You definitely want to seek the help of professionals,” Olsen said. “I’ve seen a lot of people try and treat this on their own, and they do it very wrong, and then we have to come in to clean up their mess, as well as all the bugs.”
