Top item for your emergency kit and other must-haves to stay prepared
Having an emergency kit is critical, and among the must-haves is a plan––the item that should 'top your list' when compiling a kit, says the Canadian Red Cross
When you think of an emergency kit, a flashlight and spare batteries may first come to mind.
While those are important items to include, the Canadian Red Cross says having a plan should top your list.

“It all starts with an emergency plan. This is the information for you and your family.[It has information on] where you could go to stay if you need to evacuate, insurance policies, medication, contact information, etc.," said Ancel Langille, senior manager of emergency management for the Canadian Red Cross, in a recent interview with The Weather Network.Next up on the checklist are important documents.
“Things like your birth certificate, passport [and] insurance certificate. You can also store them on a USB key and you can email copies to yourself," said Langille.

If you have kids, having a colouring book or a game to keep them occupied will give you valuable time to deal with the situation at hand.
Information is key, too, so a solar-powered or crank radio will help you keep on to of it.
“It’s also really important to have sufficient charging cords for your various devices."
And there are medications and food, as well.
“When you evacuate, you may be stuck in a vehicle for a while so it’s a good idea to have some snacks.”
Canned goods are also good, sp don’t forget the can opener.

The Red Cross also recommends having two litres of water set aside per person, per day, for cooking and for drinking. If you have pets, don't forget pet food.
Lastly, don’t forget about cash.
“[Include] small bills and coins in case the bank machines aren't working, and you’re not able to use your debit cards and your credit cards," said Langille.
